Works by Lottie Davies, born in UK, from the series Memories and Nightmares are to be shown at Galerija Fotografija gallery. She has won recognition with numerous awards, including the first prize at the 2011 International Art Laguna Award in Italy, and the Renaissance Photography Prize the same year in London. Her work garnered international acclaim with the image Quints, which won First Prize at the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Awards 2008 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, has described Davies’ work as ''brilliantly imaginative''.
The project Memories and Nightmares is concerned with images inspired by narratives of individual experience, both real and fictional. It began in 2008, when the artist asked several of her friends to send written accounts of early childhood memories or nightmares. She discovered a rich vein of fascinating stories. .As the artist said in an interview in NymPhoto: ''I also wanted to try a different approach, by creating images from an idea in someone’s head, rather than the 'found' images I often shoot. This project is about the tales and myths which we use to tell our own lives; memories, life-stories, beliefs. In many ways, stories and memories are a uniquely human experience; we have used them for generations to illustrate our lives, record ourselves for the future, and to make sense of the past.''
