History of the Place

The building of the Italian Cultural Institute, which the Italian State is the owner, was built as a hospital in the district of Mala Strana at the beginning of the 1600 by the Italian Congregation of Prague, an important religious-welfare organization founded in 1575 from the large Italian colony that lived in the city since the Renaissance period. In the 1700  it was also an orphanage turned into silk factory and in the 1900 became the Institute of Culture.
The Baroque chapel currently used as exhibition space, it is a part of this Palace.

Purpuses and activities

The Italian Cultural Institute is an ideal place for meeting and dialogue for intellectuals, artists and cultural professionals but also for ordinary citizens, Italian and foreign, who wish to establish or maintain the relationship with Italy. It aims to promote the Italian language and culture in the Czech Republic through the organization of events and cultural activities, facilitating the meeting of ideas, arts and sciences, in collaboration with the most important institutions of Czech culture.
