Clara Lotta Dittmer | Espronceda Residency

The young German artist Clara Lotta Dittmer (Hamburg, 1992) is currently experiencing her 6-week art residency at Espronceda which she won during the last edition of Arte Laguna Prize in March 2019.

Espronceda is an innovative art centre in the heart of Barcelona which has been working with Arte Laguna Prize for several years, offering a residency in a multi-disciplinary environment, including a final exhibition in its amazing spaces.

When she found out that she was chosen as the winner of this prize, Clara felt incredibly honored and excited to immerse herself in this new experience. “Being taken out of normal, daily life for 6 weeks and to immerse myself in a new environment is such a great experience that I am really thankful for”.

As soon as she arrived, she immediately felt welcomed by the city and its people. The encounters she made during her stay where a big inspiration to her, in an artistic and human way. As she recalls: “I would go on bike trips and in the morning, I would ride to beautiful places while they were still empty and as the day progressed, I would watch little scenes on the street of people talking, speaking, and resting.

There were so many moments that made me happy. Barcelona is a city full of colors, so it was not difficult to find motivation and inspiration”.

Being at Espronceda has had an effect on the size of Clara’s paintings. Having so much space to herself allowed her to confront her abilities in a new way and try out many things. After this residency, she now feels very refreshed, stronger, and more self-confident as an artist.

The result of her wandering around Barcelona, losing herself in its streets, listening to the city and the sounds of the people is the upcoming solo exhibition “People”, which will open on August 27th at Espronceda. The show will display a new series of portraits that Clara painted during the residency. With People Clara aims at exploring the mystery and the complexity of human beings and existence. Her main interest is to describe and observe the story and voices of people, and their daily lives on the streets.

Moreover, on September 4th there will be the finissage with a talk between Clara and Savina Tarsitano, artist and co-founder of Espronceda, where they will reflect together on the role and impact of artistic residencies.
