The Polish artist Katarzyna Tomaszewska, finalist of the 10th edition of the Arte Laguna Prize and winner of the Basu Foundation for the Arts residency (Kolkata, India), tells us the story of her unforgettable experience during her creative period in Kolkata, from 1st to 31st of March, an authentic turning point for her art and self-consciousness as well.

I really did not expect to fall in love so much and find such an openness in Kolkata. It has been a profound experience for me creatively, physically and emotionally, and this is also due to the enthusiastic people I met. There are many things I learned about myself, my art, and life in general. The residency at the Basu Foundation for the Arts Gallery has been both an inspirational and an extremely enjoyable experience. I was very warmly welcomed. Since the beginning, we developed a fertile relationship in which both sides, artist and organisation, worked together to do their best. I've never been housed in such a nice place. I'm very grateful for their support. I was lucky to have the opportunity to show my works during the presentation at the Polish Institute in Delhi, where I talked about my work in a diferent context. It gave me a new point of view of my own production. My residency in India has been very positive and I feel enriched. This rare opportunity gave me the possibility to create and to experiment. It will definetely influence my future artworks.

A partner of Arte Laguna Prize since 2014, Basu Foundation for the Arts ( BFA ) is a nonprofit, philanthropic organisation established in 1911 and revived in 2014 to encourage and support innovation, experimentation and potential in the arts. Placing the artist at the core, the foundation facilitates a programme of dance, music, sound, performance art, theatre and visual arts exhibitions and residencies both in India and internationally.
