Venice, 12 june 2013 – Arte Laguna Prize chooses the Venice Art Night – the event that every year involves all the subjects dealing with art and culture in the city – to officially open the entries to the 8th edition of the international contest.
Drawing its inspiration from the popular radio drama by Orson Welles “War of the Worlds”, which in 1938 stirred terror by convincing Americans that they were under attack by aliens, Arte Laguna Prize makes aliens land in Venice on Saturday, June 22nd at the Telecom Italia Future Centre, for the launch of the new edition.

From 6 p.m. Russian artist Sasha Frolova, a finalist of the last edition of the Prize, will bring on stage intergalactic sculptures and characters through a rich program of performances and music shows.
The key moment of the evening is the presentation of the official video of the 8th Arte Laguna Prize, followed by a cocktail reception.
The performances will alternate with readings of passages drawn from science-fiction novels, performed by Mattia Peretti and other young actors of the acting company Cantiere Ca’ Foscari. A photographic set will be mounted for a close encounter with the aliens. Live music will be played all night long.

The 2013-14 edition of Arte Laguna Prize features many prestigious innovations:

The strong point of Arte Laguna Prize, the art residencies this year are 6 thanks to the introduction of two new partners. The Glass School Abate Zanetti in Murano, the Slovenian festival Art Stays, the marble company Miramarmi in Vicenza and the Mumbai residency will be sided by the historic artistic Foundry Battaglia in Milan, where the works by some of the greatest international artists such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Giovanni Penone were created, as well as the collaboration with the city of Nurnberg, featuring a cultural exchange between Venetian and German artists.

Into the Arte Laguna network, precisely among the “Business for Art” prizes, Riva 1920 has entered, the historic furniture company based in Cantù, which re-uses Venetian “briccole” – the poles indicating the safest routes to the boats in the lagoon – finding in this way the right balance between tradition and innovation, production and recycling. Through Arte Laguna Prize the artists are invited to present their ideas for the creation of an object in “briccola” wood coming from the Venetian lagoon, and then create it at the company. The object will be presented at Salone del Mobile in Milan in April 2014.

The 8th Arte Laguna Prize inaugurates a new collaboration formula with galleries, called “Artist in gallery”. Galleries are no longer 20, but 5, extremely well-selected and exclusively international galleries. The galleries will choose the artist with whom they will organize a personal exhibition accompanied by a grant of 500 Euros.

Artists can apply by 30 October 2013 for one or more of the five sections of the competition (painting, photographic art, sculpture and installation, performance and video art, virtual and digital art). The works will be evaluated and selected by a jury of international experts, including directors of foundations and museums and independent curators, and headed by Igor Zanti. The overall winners will be announced in March 2014 during the opening of the finalists exhibition at Venice Arsenale.
